Role Play

It all started one night, fuelled by prosecco and the excitement of becoming a policewoman, a fire fighter, aeroplane pilot and vet all in one night. From then we went for monthly drinks, celebrated a friend’s birthday and dressed up as Santa on a pub crawl. Then 2020 hit, we were all faced with a pandemic. Being the loudmouth northerner, I am. I wanted to keep check on all my friends because to me they are family. I made sure we had weekly Zoom nights. It began by laughing at the same jokes, a friend singing karaoke on her birthday by herself and testing out new games on Air Console. We celebrated your birthday, even though it wasn’t the one you wanted, we’ll make up for it next year, I promise! One night I reached out, knowing you needed a friend and someone to talk to. We spoke for hours on end, me baking a cake, you were playing Xbox games. I found out who Snoopy was, you found out who Josh and Eoin were. We battled each other on an app like Trivial Pursuit, made sure we won each other points playing Cards Against Humanity with friends and how you had hidden knowledge about Star Wars. In spite of all the similarities, the laughs, the jokes, it wasn’t to be, because you said no to going for a drink. I accepted it and tried to move on, but I knew it was much more, as I fell over a gnome being nervous around you the first time we met for real. Weekends went by, pubs reopened, you took me for a spin in your car, we played games with friends, fought French guys on Sea of Thieves and friends realising we were a little more then what was being said. Still scared about being rejected a second time, I asked you the question, are we just friends or a little more? Knowing not to rush you into heavy decisions, I left it to you, which you said, “fancy going for that drink?” Since then we’ve sailed up and down the River Thames, been span upside down, gone out for dinner, watched movies and you even got sand between my toes. I knew it was love, when you went out your way to buy me a gigantic balloon, the way to win my heart. People ask me how lockdown was, expecting me to say it was rough, some parts were, but for me, I feel like the luckiest girl in the world, because of Covid-19 I got to know and fall in love with you!
